It was supposed to be the perfect road trip; you and your friends traveling the iconic Route 66 through America’s heartland. It soon became apparent, however, that “heartland” is synonymous with desert wasteland. A string of dive motels and sketchy diners has left your group wondering how this stretch of highway ever became so famous. Only thoughts of Southern California keep you going down this godforsaken “Main Street of America.”

As gas stations become more scarce and the needle gets closer to empty, you’re forced to pull over at a filling station that looks like it’s been standing since the invention of the automobile. There’s no sign of an attendant anywhere. You begin pumping gas as one of your group goes behind the building to look for a bathroom. Moments later you hear a scream and something slams into the back of your head.

That’s the last thing anyone in your group remembers before you all wake up in a horrifying motel room. No one knows how you got here, and you appear to be locked in. Worse yet, it’s apparent from your surroundings that you need to get out before whoever put you here comes back.

The once thriving Coalcot mining community has set desolate for over a century; an abandoned relic to a bygone era of grit, grime and tough as nails coal men that courted danger like a dame worth a day’s wage.  While researching the old community in the McDowell County archives of West Virginia you stumble across something interesting; a short entry in the middle of the diary of an unnamed miner.

May 21, 1893.
We had eight that didn’t come up today.  One was McGuinness.  Fine guy.  New baby – two weeks old.  Me and the Canary Crew finished stashin’ the last of Rockefella’s secret treasure.  We’ll seal it off tomorrow during shift then ol’ Johnny’s gonna make us all rich for our trouble.

Has anyone else noticed this before?  Could this really be referencing the John D. Rockefeller?  If so, could that secret treasure still be sealed up somewhere in the old, abandoned Coalcot Mine?

You finish your research for the day and try to go on with your life as normal, but you can’t get these questions out of your head.  Finally, after three months of obsessing over that diary entry you gather together a group of your adventurous friends to venture down into the abandoned mine to search for Rockefeller’s secret treasure.   It’s a dangerous undertaking, but the payoff could be immense.

You and your fellow comrades are aboard a high tech submarine, The SS Escape, somewhere in The Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. On the way to your top secret mission, equipment begins to fail and the captain has to make an emergency ascent to the surface. Moments later, you feel a thunderous crash and everyone instantly gets the same panicked feeling… iceberg!

All around you emergency lights and alarms go off. The vessel has been wedged into the center of the ice. The captain calls to the engine room notifying you that all major equipment has gone dysfunctional as a result of the massive impact. Even worse, the defrosters are also down causing all of the escape hatches to be frozen shut. Since the radar is down, no other nearby ships will be able to find you and come to your rescue.

The cold is already setting in and oxygen is running low. You must find a way to repair the defrosters, make the hatches operational, and then you and your crew can go topside to use the few flares that you have aboard to signal the Coast Guard. You must hurry; you have only 60 minutes before all oxygen is completely depleted!

Winter, 1936. The small colonial community of Leonardtown, Maryland. The weather is rather harsh this season, and a strange sickness is running rampant throughout the town. The local apothecary, Doctor Herman VanDersoot, has never been busier. Unable to transport his patients to the distant city hospital due to the constant snowfall, he may be the only hope for the residents. Some, however, are beginning to form suspicions about VanDersoot.

No one really knows much about him. He moved to the edge of town and setup shop a few years ago. He lives alone and mostly keeps to himself when he is not working. He doesn’t seem particularly dangerous, but there’s something about his grim smile. Nevertheless, he’s the only apothecary for miles around and people patronize his shop out of necessity. The recent breakout of illnesses are specifically alarming though. Despite being treated by VanDersoot, no one is getting any better… in fact, they are getting worse; some have displayed extremely odd behavior, and some have even died! Could he be behind this?

As a resident of this town, you and a few others have decided to take matters into your own hands and poke around his shop one night. You’re fully aware that he keeps strange hours, and could potentially return at any point, but it’s worth the risk if you can uncover any kind of malpractice on his part. Make quick work of inspecting the small shop and see if you can find any evidence that could point this outbreak back to VanDersoot. Your efforts could save the whole town. But don’t get caught. Who knows what kind of horrors you may face!
